Intro

You got a new mattress, but it feels a bit firm. You’re probably thinking you’ve made a mistake. You’ve done all this research for your new mattress, but somehow it doesn’t feel right. Don’t worry! All this is quite normal. Your new mattress hasn’t “broken” in yet.

In this article, we’ll discuss how to break in a new mattress, how long it takes, and tips to help you along.

Be sure to consult your mattress warranty when breaking in your new mattress. It will provide the best instructions for you to follow.

So, how long does it take?

It takes approximately 1 - 2 months for a new mattress to break in. Don’t fret if it feels different from what’s felt in the store. Even a soft mattress will feel firm in the beginning. If you’ve done proper research, then you’ll have nothing to worry about. It’s simply the final process of getting a new mattress.

Keep in mind that your body needs to get used to your new mattress, too. Your average mattress will last 7 - 8 years, so you’re probably still used to your old one. Expect it to take about 1 week for you to get used to it. Do you remember buying a new pair of shoes? They felt different, right? The same will be for your new mattress.

Special considerations

There are different mattress types out there, so each will break in differently. Take note of these key differences for your most common mattress types.

Innerspring mattresses, your traditional type of mattress, will be easier to break in and won't take as long. Your best bet is to rotate the mattress during the break-in period so that pressure is applied evenly. Ensuring adequate airflow will also get rid of any odors that might come with it. You only need a few hours of airflow before its ready.

Memory foam will usually take the longest to break-in because it's made up of layers of material. Common advice suggests to raise the temperature of your room to about 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Doing so will soften its core, allowing the mattress to quickly conform to your body. Memory foam will also need time to expand to its original shape if it arrives packed in a box.

Hybrid mattresses depends on the manufacturer and what material it predominantly uses. Most hybrid mattress are a combination of a spring mattress with memory foam layers. Other types include latex or organic material. Latex mattresses are usually ready right out of the store. Be sure to consult your warranty or a store consultant.

Higher quality mattresses might take longer due to the durability of the materials used. During this time, your body will also adjust to it. Before you know it, your mattress will conform to your comfort level. You’ll start feeling better, feel more rested, and happy that your sleep investment was worth the wait.

Let it breathe

One of the first things you need to do to break in a new mattress is letting it breathe. This is especially true for a bed-in-a-box. They arrive compressed and wrapped in plastic, so they’ll need to be aired out for a bit. Some of these mattresses will come with off-gassing odors that need a little air to get rid of them (about 1 or 2 days). Airing our your new mattress in direct sunlight will also help with the elimination of odors, as well.

Give it some warmth

Cranking up the heat will help a new mattress soften up a bit. Some natural sunlight would be better, plus it'll save you money from using your heating utilities. When heat is applied, materials in mattresses will usually soften up quicker. However, if you're a hot sleeper, be sure to heat your mattress up (either utilities or sunlight) before heading to bed. Having your environment cooler will help you sleep and stay asleep.

Have the proper foundation

Having the right foundation will make sure your new mattress will break in evenly and nicely. Some people make the mistake that any mattress foundation is equipped for every mattress type. The best way to know is reading the warranty or asking a store consultant for the best foundation for your new mattress. Pressure is good

Applying an even amount of pressure can help break in a new mattress. This will help soften it up faster than letting it settle on its own. Some suggest walking on your new mattress. If you're uncomfortable doing that, you can use your hands and legs to apply pressure throughout the surface or roll around using your body as a rolling pin. However, the best pressure is to constantly sleep on it every night. If you nap during the day on the couch, switch to your new mattress instead.
