Our Company
For over 60 years, Jonathan Stevens Mattress Co has manufactured quality mattresses in Grand Rapids. Started by Neil DeWitt in 1945, he felt that he could offer the public a good quality mattress at less than furniture store retail prices if he built them himself.
The original location was in Grand Rapids, MI on Division Ave. just north of Burton St. In 1954, the original location burned down, so Neil moved the business to 3419 S. Division and in 1957 a second store was opened at 1010 Leonard St. NW, also in Grand Rapids. In 1972 Neil decided to retire and sold his interest to Ron Zagel, a supplier of the cotton padding used in the mattresses.
Dick Westrate, our general manager, joined Jonathan Stevens in 1970 as a high school co-op student. Tim Westrate, our wholesale sales manager, also started as a co-op student.
In 1984 the back room factories at the Division St. and Leonard St. store were combined and moved to 995 36th St. SE in a 20,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility.
With our management team of Ron, Dick and Tim, Jonathan Stevens Mattress Co. continues to be the fastest growing factory-direct mattress company in Western Michigan. We also currently supply some of the finest hotels in Michigan, such as the Amway Grand Plaza, the J. W. Marriott, the Soaring Eagle casino and the Bay Harbour Inn with our unique innerspring mattresses.
